Font - AITA for "moving in" with an unpaying tenant I am a 38 year old landlord of a few single family rentals. One of the rentals is an old, beaten up trailer from 1955 that I rented to a single mom and her daughter(around 14 now) a couple years ago. I purchased the property for the land and was upfront about my intentions with the trailer right from the beginning. I put the bare minimum of work into this trailer, but it is an affordable place to live for now. I charged her $600 a month and mad

Font - Fast forward to last month. She informed me that there was a roof leak and needed more tar. Upon inspection, it is no longer feasible to keep repairing and it would need an entire new roof. Well, its not cost effective to replace the new roof so I told her she would need to find other housing. She proceeding to play the "eviction ban" card and has refused to leave or pay (even the $600). T had my lawyer send her the "non-habitable" letter and tell her to leave by September 15th. She has n

Font - So yesterday I went over there, walked in and started "living". She called the police on me, and when they came I showed them all the paperwork and told the officer, that she is right, I cannot legally evict her, but I am not evicting her. She is living for free, and needs to pay for EXCLUSIVE use of the house. If she does not pay for exclusivity then she is my vagrant roommate. The officer sided with me, and told her there is nothing he can do to make either of us leave. It is a civil ma

Font - I no doubt think l'm in the right here. Someone is living on my property and not paying anything, I have every right to use said property. I'm curious as to what others think about this. I know many landlords who would change the locks while she isn't home and risk the charge. I didn't do it that way. I even told her if she kept paying $600 I would let her stay, but you are renting the land, not the house. I can't keep losing money to fix something for someone else to live. 4 1.9k 1k 1, S

Font - Esh. Her staying in a home that you have done what needs to be done to tell her is not able to be lived in. You are taking extreme measures. You should actually just call the building code people in your area so that they can deem the building unsafe and she will have to move. Tell her you are calling code enforcement because they may not even let her enter to get her stuff if it is that unsafe. O 6 Reply ↑ 3k 3 ...

Font - Psychological_Sign_6 · 4h NTA People act like ALL landlords are making $$$$ & can afford squatters. You gave her 40 days notice as 1 of your comments said. She didn't like that has stopped paying rent. Just bc she has kids doesn't mean its his responsibility to let her live for free. The place isn't habitable anymore for people let alone for children to live in and you plan to replace the building to make a better income There's nothing wrong in that.

Font - The "yta" comments are coming from entitled people who think they should live for free. You provide a service and expect to be paid for the service You wouldn't go to a restaurant and expect food for free or go to a store and expect the items be be free. Just because you breed, doesn't mean everybody should take pity on you. Not my kids not my responsibility. Its up to her to get her act right and leave. l'd linger all day everyday G Reply 1.1k ...

Font - YTA When you become a landlord, you take on certain legal responsibilities. It doesn't sound like you are approaching this in a manner that would meet those requirements. G Reply 4 27 3 ...

Font - Drew4 · 1h YTA. As a landlord, repairs are 100% your responsibility, and you can't simply make statements to waive that legal responsibility away. What you are attempting to do is called a self-help or constructive eviction. This is actually a crime in many states. In fact, by being in the domicile without the tenant's permission, you are also likely guilty of criminal trespassing. If the tenant has a clue, she will justifiably take you to court and empty your bank account with the help o

Rectangle - Skynoer · 3h 4 Awards You never provided affordable housing, she was paying 600 for a leaking unfit to live in trailer with her daughter. Man, every time I read a post from a landlord I just sit and wonder how someone could be so incredibly heartless. **Editing to add YTA verdict, thought l'd be downvoted to hell bc some of y'all rly love landlords lol but thanks for the awards!! Font - thefoxinmotion · 2h Partassipant [2] YTA, you're a slumlord. $600 a month for a 1955 trailer? Are you even serious? Thank God you make sure she has working utilities, wow, how considerate of you to follow the bare legal minimum. You knew what you were doing. You evicted her. Congrats on finding a loophole to make your blatantly illegal move into something A-ok. A 6 Reply ↑ 99 ... +

Font - creamyturtle • 55m YTA. this is not legal and you need to talk to your attorney before something bad happens. you don't have a summary judgement or an eviction order from the sheriff, and her month-to-month tenancy still stands. she had exclusive use of the property before you changed the terms of her residency, you will lose in court G Reply 4 vVote 3 ...

Font - moonbase9000 · 2h YTA and anyone saying NTA doesn't understand that landlords have an obligation to maintain minimum habitability standards. OP can't just decide to let the trailer become uninhabitable as a way to force the tenant out. And OP doesn't have the authority to declare it uninhabitable. G Reply 4 37 3 ..

Font - Glum_Association4039 · 49m YTA - being a landlord is truly one of the scummiest "jobs" on the planet because you're effectively making a living off a basic human right. $600 is unaffordable for a person working 40 hours a week at minimum wage - they would be spending HALF their salary on living expenses. That is not affordable housing. Contrary to what so many people are acting like, the pandemic isn't over and as a landlord, you actually should be striving to support your tenant that are
